Smash Drop Daiho Ozawa, Add Darrin Harnandan-Wang

Following a disappointing finish to the Eastern Split, the East Toronto Smash have made their first roster move of the season.

The team has decided to part ways with Daiho Ozawa, their 31st overall pick in the 2024 draft, and add Darrin Harnandan-Wang to bolster their lineup for the remainder of the season.

The move comes after the Smash posted a 4-5 record at the Eastern Split, despite getting off to a promising 3-1 start before fading in the back half of the event.

Why the Change?

The decision to release Ozawa wasn't entirely surprising, as the rookie didn't see any game action throughout the Eastern Split.

Despite being selected relatively early in the draft, Ozawa was unable to crack the rotation and earn minutes with the veteran-laden Smash roster.

With the team looking to improve their competitiveness for upcoming events, management decided to move in a different direction with a player who has already proven himself at the qualifier level.

Enter Darrin Harnandan-Wang

The Smash's new addition comes with impressive credentials from his Central qualifier performance earlier this year:

  • Overall Record: 7-3 in 10 doubles matches
  • Scoring Impact: 147 points scored, only 98 points allowed
  • Age: 22 years old

Harnandan-Wang's qualifier performance demonstrated both his ability to win matches and contribute positively to team scoring, two qualities that should translate well to the CNPL level.

At just 22 years old, he also brings a youthful energy to a roster that skews older, giving the Smash a different dynamic and potentially more upside for long-term development.

Roster Implications

The addition should provide depth and competition for the Smash's existing lineup:

  • Men: Dalbir Bhandal (32), Nathan Choi (30), Darrin Harnandan-Wang (22)
  • Women: Christina Chin, Kim Layton

Harnandan-Wang's age creates an interesting dynamic—he's eight years younger than Choi and ten years younger than Bhandal, potentially offering a different playing style and fresh perspective.

His strong qualifier performance suggests he has the skills to contribute immediately, while his youth provides the Smash with a player who could develop significantly over time.

Looking for a Spark

After their promising start faded into a disappointing 4-5 finish, the Smash clearly felt they needed to shake things up.

While their veteran core of Christina Chin and Kim Layton performed well individually, the team couldn't maintain the consistency needed to build on their early success.

Adding a player with Harnandan-Wang's qualifier credentials and competitive hunger could provide the spark needed to help the Smash reach their potential in upcoming CNPL events.

Moving Forward

This roster move signals that the East Toronto Smash aren't satisfied with mediocrity and are willing to make changes to improve their competitiveness.

Harnandan-Wang's addition gives them another weapon and more options as they look to build on the positives from their Eastern Split performance while addressing the issues that led to their late-season fade.

The question now is whether this change can help the Smash find the consistency and chemistry needed to compete with the CNPL's elite teams.
